MDS Coordinator Certification guide
MDS Coordinators complete the Minimum Data Set assessments that drive resident care plans, public quality ratings and Medicare payment. Here is what the role involves, who it suits, and how this masterclass prepares you.
What is MDS Coordinator certification?
MDS Coordinators are nurses who manage the assessment process in a nursing facility. Federal rules require that a registered nurse conduct or coordinate each assessment and sign and certify that it is complete (Section Z). Because employers want proof that a nurse understands the process, many MDS nurses complete a structured training program and earn a certificate of completion.
The MDS Masterclass is a nine-module, 10-contact-hour course that ends with a completion certificate. It is a course-completion certificate from MDS Masterclass; it is not a state license or a government credential. Always follow your employer's and state's requirements.
Requirements for nurses
- An active nursing license. Individual enrollment in this course is for LVNs and RNs.
- Comfort reviewing medical records, interviewing residents and working with the interdisciplinary team.
- Attention to documentation, because accurate coding depends on what is recorded during the look-back period.
- Remember that only a licensed RN signs Section Z, and that assessments are completed in person with the resident.
